〈Entangled Scenario〉 (2025) is a project that reveals the “entangled sensibilities” surrounding life and existence through multiple layered perspectives, developed from the artist’s ongoing artistic research. The term “entanglement”, as Heemin Son understands it, extends from the epistemic world of the 16th–18th centuries—where magic, religion, philosophy, and early science coexisted—to the narrative sensibility of biologists and paleontologists who speculated about the origins and evolution of life, and further to the physical object of the fossil, shaped by intersecting forces of time, minerals, organisms, gravity, and wind. It also includes the likeness and homology produced by modern AI technologies, as well as the shamanistic practices through which humans project emotion, spirit, and affect onto objects and nature.
Although Son has long focused on scientific and research-based methods, this exhibition moves across shamanistic attitudes toward life and death, premodern modes of understanding, and contemporary technological sensibilities. Through these intersections, the project asks how humans—beings who live “toward death”—might reconsider their life and mortality in a time of deepening global crisis.
The exhibition takes a composite form that brings together sculptural works, generative AI images, and shamanistic sound. Visitors encounter a space where science and shamanism, the ancient and the futuristic, the material and the immaterial coexist, offering a multilayered experience of how humanity perceives life.
Within 〈Entangled Scenario〉, the sculptures from the 〈Future Fossils〉 (2024– ) series are made from synthetic resin (derived from fossil fuels, the compressed remains of ancient life), biological remnants from present-day ecosystems (such as mushrooms and fruits), and image data generated by AI systems trained on collective human cognition. Synthetic resin itself is a transformed form of ancient biological matter: life deposited in geological layers, later becoming fossil fuel, and eventually turning into contemporary industrial material.
A “future fossil,” then, becomes a condensed stratum of geological past, biological present, and cognitive future—showing that a fossil is not simply a trace of the past, but a composite of each era’s materiality and ways of understanding life.
〈Undigested〉 (2025) draws on hypotheses about early cells merging, fusing, and forming symbiotic relationships as they evolved from single-celled to multicellular organisms, and from prokaryotes to eukaryotes. This directly echoes Lynn Margulis’s theory of endosymbiosis, in which mitochondria and chloroplasts were once independent bacteria that were absorbed into cells and became symbiotic partners.
〈Mouth, Anus, Skeleton〉 (2025) references the evolutionary divergence between protostomes and deuterostomes—how the orientation of an organism’s mouth and anus shaped the development of exoskeletons or endoskeletons. The work reflects the tubular forms and the color and texture of various species’ outer and inner layers.
Finally, 〈Love-Born Death〉 (2025) deals with the evolutionary paradox in which life shifted from asexual reproduction (self-copying) to sexual reproduction—the “invention of sex.” Although this change allowed species to persist over time, it made individual death inevitable. The work is shown as the “offspring” of 〈Undigested〉 and 〈Mouth, Anus, Skeleton〉, metaphorically merging biological reproduction with sculptural generation.
〈Entangled Scenario〉(2025)는 지속적으로 탐구해온 아티스틱 리서치를 바탕으로, 생명과 실존을 둘러싼 인류의 ‘뒤섞인 감각’을 복합적 층위로 드러내는 프로젝트다. 손희민이 주목하는 ‘Entanglement(뒤섞임, 얽힘)’은 16~18세기 마법·종교·철학·과학이 공존하던 전근대의 에피스테메, 생물학자와 고생물학자가 생물의 기원과 진화를 추정하던 서사의 감각, 그리고 시공간·광물·생물·중력·풍력 등이 교차하며 형성된 ‘화석’이라는 물체에까지 확장된다. 여기에 현대 인공지능 기술이 만들어내는 유사성과 상동의 감각, 사물과 자연에 정동과 정념을 부여하는 인류의 무속적 행위까지 포괄한다.
작가는 그동안 과학적이고 고증적인 방법론에 집중해왔으나, 이번 전시에서는 실존·생사·생명을 둘러싼 인류의 무속적 태도에서부터 전근대적 인식체계, 그리고 현대의 기술적 감각에 이르기까지를 교차적으로 탐구한다. 이를 통해 ‘인류의 위기’가 심화되는 시대 속에서, ‘죽음을 향한 존재’로서의 인간이 다시금 자신의 삶과 죽음을 어떻게 사유할 수 있는지를 묻는다. 프로젝트 조각, 생성형 인공지능 이미지, 무속 사운드가 교차하는 복합적 형식으로 구성되며, 관객은 과학과 무속, 고대와 미래, 물질과 비물질이 공존하는 공간에서 생명을 둘러싼 인류의 다층적 인식을 경험하게 된다.
〈Entangled Scenario〉에서〈미래 화석〉(2024-) 시리즈 조각은 고대 생명의 압축물인 화석연료에서 파생된 합성수지(레진), 현재 생태계의 생물학적 잔해(버섯, 열매 등), 그리고 인류의 집단 인지를 학습한 생성형 인공지능이 생성한 이미지 데이터로 물질화된다. 합성수지는 수억 년 전 생명체가 지층에 퇴적되어 화석연료가 되고, 이것이 다시 석유화학 산업을 거쳐 현대의 물질로 변형된 것이다. 따라서 '미래 화석'은 지질학적 과거-생물학적 현재-인지적 미래가 한 물체 안에 시간의 지층처럼 응축된 형태이며, 화석이란 단순히 과거의 흔적이 아니라 각 시대의 인식과 물질이 응고된 복합체임을 보여준다.
〈Undigested〉(2025)는 초기의 세포가 생존을 위해 단세포에서 다세포로, 원핵 세포에서 진핵 세포로 합병, 융합, 공생하게 된 가설로부터 형태를 착안하였다. 이는 린 마굴리스의 내부공생설-미토콘드리아와 엽록체가 원래 독립적 박테리아였다가 세포 내로 흡수되어 공생하게 된 이론-과 직접 조응한다. 〈Mouth, Anus, Skeleton〉(2025)는 생물의 입과 항문(소화 및 배설기관)의 방향에 따라 선구동물과 후구동물이 각각 외골격과 내골격을 지닌 생물로 진화하게 된 이야기에서 착안하여, 관(통)이라는 형태와 외피, 내피에 관한 다양한 생물종의 색감과 질감을 반영하였다. 마지막으로 〈Love-Born Death〉(2025)은 생물이 무성생식(개체 복사)에서 유성생식('성'의 발명)으로 전환함으로써 종으로서는 영속하게 되었으나, 개체로서는 죽음이 필연이 된 진화의 역설을 담고 있다. 이는 〈Undigested〉와 〈Mouth, Anus, Skeleton〉가 '교배'하여 새로운 세대를 낳는 형식으로 구현되며, 생물학적 번식과 조각적 생성이 은유적으로 겹쳐진다.
